Atheist views of sin

Atheism often draws a distinction between sin and an ethical code of conduct. Sin is a term generally associated with a theological belief system (which is antithetical to atheism), and is separate from the concept of "right or wrong." Atheists typically do not use the term "sinful" to refer to actions that violate their particular moral system (particularly if "sinful" is taken to mean "acting against the wishes or commands of a deity"), preferring terms such as "wrong" or "unethical," which do not carry religious connotations. Most atheists hold that moral codes derive from societal mores or innate human characteristics, rather than religious authority. Atheists may still adhere to a strong ethical code, even if they do not use the concept of sin.

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.


Simple: Our Government is not, even with power, able to work without morals and religion. Going against morals and religion would break them. The Constitution of the United States is for religious people. It is not for any others.

There is a fellow who is running for the Montana House. He has a wonderful wife, home schooled kids and lives off the land in Western Montana. Of course they are a good Christian family.


Good for them.

But, does anyone really expect the rest of us live like that. Even if we wanted to, we could not. Most of us don't have a hobby farm and most of us do not home school our children, most of us have very little in common with this lifestyle. So, he is not representative of most Montanans and is only running for office to represent himself, his family and his minority view of Christianity.

National Day of Prayer

It was just the other day our local politicians and clergy decided to jump on the band wagon and plan to hold their first ever prayer breakfast on the National Day of Prayer. A bad news day. I was sick about it, I left a comment saying "there was a reason why it was never done before, because ITS A BAD IDEA. Now, a judge has pronounced that the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. Yep! Of course, it will be impossible to repeal it, its too popular, and the religious right really don't care if it is or not. The only part of the constitution they defend is the right to bear arms. True Christian soldiers one and all. And of course the evil atheists are in the news and are trying to destroy America as usual. Boohoo. I find it so frustrating that the theists do not understand that the 1st amendment was added not so much to protect the nonbeliever but the believers from each other.

The worst part is, those who support public prayer, ignore Jesus’ teachings about prayer in Matthew. I bet most either have not read the bible or ignore this particular teaching, because it's politically inconvenient.

Montana Freethinkers

I am thrilled to see so much activity out there. There are two active atheist groups who are making waves. Missoula and Bozeman. Both active online and in the flesh. Yeah! Of course it really helps have a University in town.
